George Washington's Breakfast

It's February! What that means for me...is trying to find stuff to fill up our time. Stuff that's exciting and thrilling for this mid-winter month where not much else is going on. So...we are just finishing up a study on George Washington for history and one of the books to read is George Washington's Breakfast by Jean Fritz.

In the story, this boy is very curious about what George Washington eats for breakfast and reads lots of books and gets his parents, grandma and the librarian all involved in discovering the secret. Anyways, I hate to ruin the ending for you...but I'm going to so I can share the recipe!

It's hoecakes! And tea. Apparently, George Washington ate hoecakes for his early breakfast.

So, we set in search of a hoecakes recipe. In the book it says they used cornmeal, salt and buttermilk. We looked up Paula Deen's recipe and it has a few more ingredients but WOWEE!! they are delicious!! It's almost like a cakey version of cornbread and a hint of funnel cake. Really good.

And a nice little history lesson turned home-economics.

Here's the recipe and just in time for Washington's birthday on the 22nd!
